We've come a long way baby!
In November 2015 we got a wild hair to purchase 300 Prom dresses and travel around Montana and northern Wyoming. Our dresses were in sizes 2-24 and priced at $75-$180. We traveled the last weekend of January 2016 and every weekend in February. Done. Sold lots of dresses. Met lots of great gals. We later received phone calls to see if "we were open." Since we don't have girls in our life, the concept of dresses, girls and Prom was a foreign concept. We also met gals who were looking for dresses for Military Balls, Cruises, MOB. We started to think, maybe we should OPEN.
Here's a link to an article that was written in the local newspaper: https://billingsgazette.com/news/local/traveling-boutique-takes-dresses-to-customers/article_d031d1e0-676c-53ea-8435-536f37831141.html
In March we moved into a TINY room inside a salon. People still found us. They continued to buy our dresses. We started to think again that maybe we could make this business work. In June of 2016 we moved into a 1500 square foot store front on 24th Street and increased our inventory to include dresses in sizes 0-30 and expanded into casuals in sizes S-6XL and shoes in sizes 5-12. We also carry jewelry from some great artists from Montana, Wyoming and South Dakota.
In May 2019 we moved again! This time to beautiful downtown Billings Montana (2814 2nd Ave N) and into 5000 square feet. That's a lot of space which means we can carry even more great and affordable items!
We have come a long and have learned so much. We want to thank each and everyone of you who has chosen to support our little adventure. We thank you for choosing us to spend your hard earned money. For those of you who have not been in, we would love to EARN your business also.
Customer service and honesty is who we are. We are not a SALEMAN. We will not send you out the door with something that doesn't make and look you feel like a million bucks. We also are not TRENDY. We won't be carrying the ROMPER or something else that may be a hit in LA or NYC. We pay attention to what other stores carry and will not offer the same product. We believe there is a customer for everyone.
A background in retail? NO. A fashionista? NO. Barbara is a simple country girl from North Dakota where her mom made most of her clothing until she was old enough to sew her own. She graduated from North Dakota State University (Go BISON) with a double major in Family & Consumer Science and Mass Communications with a minor in Food & Nutrition. Later she earned a Master of Education in Professional Development from University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire. Past jobs include: Extension Educator for University of Wisconsin, University of Wyoming and Montana State University. She has also taught middle school and high school as well as worked for Taste of Home Cooking Schools. The passion for fibers and fabrics she does have. The idea of connecting with her customers and sharing her knowledge of lines and fibers is what motivates her.
We learn so much from our customers. We continue to grow as a business as we learn what our customers want. Our MISSION: To provide a great dress to every woman no matter her size or her economics. We have choosen to have the best selection of dresses in the REGION. We special order VERY few dresses for customers. Our customer is the one who has chosen to come into our store, try on dresses and leave with a dress in their hands.
There are so many things that makes us unique. The top of the list is that we genuinely care about our customers. Another; as of 1-1-18 our inventory included 2,200 dresses, offering 1-3 dresses per style. We keep track of where each style goes and will guarantee that when purchasing a dress from MONTANA DRESS CO, no one else will have the same dress at the event.
We love what we do but more importantly are proud of our cheering section. We have the best husband and son in the world. They are the ones who can be found in the store helping move things, washing windows, putting things up beyond our reach, and occasionally running the store so we can get our hair done. They are also the ones that put up with 300 dresses in our house in the beginning and toted them in and out of the trailer at several shows. Thank you to Steve and Ryan.
Please come in and let us earn your business. Whether you don't like to shop or have had bad experiences in the past, give MONTANA DRESS CO a chance. We know what's out there and we are a totally different business.
